Jeffrey Chodorow, Principal of China Grill Management (China Grill, Blue Door at Delano, Asia de Cuba and Social in Los Angeles and Miami) and critically acclaimed chef Zak Pelaccio (Fatty Crab) have opened Borough Food & Drink, a welcome addition to the Flatiron neighborhood.
Showcasing the diverse food and drink of New York, the cuisine incorporates artisanal products sourced from the five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island) as well as fresh meats and produce from the greater New York State area. Chodorow and Pelaccio, concept co-creator and contributing chef, have teamed up with celebrated designer Mark Zeff (Social in Los Angeles and Miami, Night Hotel in New York and The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas) for this innovative project.
With a strong emphasis on Eastern and Western European flavors along with some Asian influences, the extensive menu gives a thorough glimpse into the varied ethnic diversities that shape the culinary landscape of New York City. The menu is equal parts compilation of resources and creativity, featuring New York’s finest ingredients and classic recipes, interpreted by two of New York’s most innovative culinary talents with Executive Chef Paul Williams at the kitchen’s helm.
Bf&d’s mission is to promote the local and seasonal ingredients and products from culinary artisans across New York City. Featured products hail from greater known New York institutions such as Russ & Daughters on the Lower East Side, Sullivan Street Bakery in Hell’s Kitchen, and M & I Food Company in Brighton Beach as well as lesser known vendors including Calabria Pork Store in the Bronx, Allen Street Dumplings in Chinatown, Black Bull Meat Market in Astoria, Queens and Pereg Gourmet Spices in Flushing, Queens.
Guests can experience a one-stop culinary tour of New York with a taste of Cured Black Bull Suho Meso Dried Beef Carpaccio with Thanksgiving Farms bean salad, celery hearts and pickled green beans; next stop, Manhattan’s Lower East Side with Russ & Daughters Three Herring Plate served with three different types of herring-matjes, cream sauce and mustard-with toasted black bread; continue on to Brooklyn for the Sikorski Kielbasa Reuben Sandwich loaded with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on grilled rye bread with cole slaw and French fries; and Faicco’s Sausage and Peppers "San Gennaro Festival style," will give guests a taste of Little Italy on East 22nd Street. Bf&d concludes the trip with house-made ice creams served as sundaes or floats, and a side of New York City nostalgia.
The restaurant boasts one of, if not the most, extensive selection of New York beers found under one roof, featuring 30 of the state’s finest craft beers. Featured drafts include Blue Point Toasted Lager, Checkered Cab Blond Ale from Chelsea Brewing Company, Captain’s Reserve Imperial IPA from Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. and Keegan Ales Mother’s Milk Stout; notable bottles include Southampton Double White and Ommegang’s Abbey Ale and 3 Philosophers . The wine list also highlights varieties from Long Island and upstate New York.
Designer Mark Zeff has completely transformed the preexisting space to evoke the character of a cozy neighborhood hangout by utilizing elements such as reclaimed woods salvaged from underwater piers, mushroom-growing barns and oak beams from old factories. He also uses vintage industrial furniture, lighting and accessories to create a convivial, unpretentious environment where locals, friends and travelers alike can share a memorable meal.
The main dining room features a customized pantry with shelving containing a selection of sauces and products that are available for sale, as well as a separate glass enclosed wine and cheese room. The long maple bar and accompanying leather stools create the ideal location to enjoy the eclectic cuisine and cocktails. Whether seated at one of the restaurant’s communal tables or playing pool in the stylish back room, Bf&d is the perfect spot to catch up with friends or perhaps make some new ones.
The retail offerings are reminiscent of the mid-20th century when restaurants showcased their specialty products. An old-fashioned gourmet deli case featured at Bf&d includes cured meats, cheeses, pastries and house-made ice creams that can be sampled in the inviting lounge that flanks the outdoor patio with seating for 28.
