The Yankees’ skipper’s father Jerry Girardi is afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease.
“Alzheimer’s is one of the more insidious diseases for both the patient and the family,” said Kay. “It is heart wrenching to lose the one you love while they are still living and breathing. My sister and I went through it with our mom, Rose. It’s devastating. There is simply not enough funding for this disease which will eventually touch everyone in this country as the population grows older. We’re hoping this night brings more awareness and f unding to find a cure and spare future families this heartbreak.”
Remember When, Remember Now
Jim Nantz has been living out a boyhood dream at CBS Sports for over two decades now. In 2007, the sportscaster’s career came to a pinnacle with a 63-day stretch of callingSuper Bowl XLI, the Final Four, and the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga. Golf was his first love—as a member of the University of Houston’s men’s team, he befriended and roomed with future greats Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister. Nantz’s father, who played college football and had long supported his son’s goal of one day announcing the Masters, would have come along on the journey had he notbeen long shut out of the world by the ravages of a stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Nantz wrote about that relationship in his new book, Always by My Side, a reminiscence of his “hero and inspiration,” set to the backdrop of the two-month trip he wished they could’ve shared.
A large portion of the proceeds will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research at the Texas Medical Center’s Neurological Institute. When Jim’s father recently passed away, in lieu of flowers, Jim’s family had donations directed to this cause. In Jim’s book, Dr. Stanley Appel, who stood by their family’s side many days while Jim’s dad struggled with Alzheimer’s, is spoken about several times. ; And Dr. Appel heads up the Neurological Institute.
