Broadway-star and Tony-award winner Betty Buckley comes to SOPAC for an intimate cabaret performance of the music that made her famous, as well as classics from throughout her career.  A fixture of stage and screen, Buckley is respected for her ability to capture the human poignancy of any character and for transforming those emotions through song.  She is joined by accompanist and established jazz performer Kenny Werner.

This special reading of four one-act plays, directed by Antony Marsellis, will include:  The Treasurer’s Report by Robert Benchley, Run, I’ve Got To Love/Confessions of a Dyslexic Lover by Susan Charlotte, When The Women Come Out To Dance by Elmore Leonard and Marred Bliss by Mark O’Donell (co-author Hairspray, Crybaby) starring John Shea and Rex Reed.  Highlighting what writer and creator of the series Susan Charlotte describes as the forgotten art of the short play, these one-acts will explore the different sides of comedy. During the post-performance reception in the SOPAC Loft, audience members will have the opportunity to meet and participate in a question-and-answer session with the actors, writer and director.

Forbidden Broadway

Forbidden Broadway is a collection of musical parodies of Broadway shows hatched by Gerard Alessandrini. With its first appearance in New York’s Upper West Side in 1982, Forbidden Broadway is now New York’s longest running musical comedy revue. It is updated regularly, sparking repeat views of the performance by theatergoers looking for even more laughs. Apart from its hilarious parodies, Forbidden Broadway also provides an entertaining informal history of American musical theater. It has also stood as a showcase for then-unknown actors who have since gone on to star in Broadway, as well as in movies and television. Viewers of Forbidden Broadway will enjoy a dose of theater history and lots of laughs, cementing Forbidden Broadway’s reputation as one of funniest evenings in theatre.

Singer-actress Klea Blackhurst, best known for her tribute to Ethel Merman in Everything the Traffic Will Allow, will present with award-winning composer, arranger and jazz musician Billy Stritch, a memorable night celebrating the talented Hoagy Carmichael. Selected songs from Carmichael, a legendary musical composer, will be performed by the duo, including hits such as “Stardust” and “Georgia on My Mind,” in this brilliant musical tribute.
