Bistro61, the intimate, Upper East Side Manhattan French bistro, is owned by Executive Chef/restaurateur Anthony Raggiri and his partners, Head Chef Adil Fawzi and restaurateur Jon Goldstein.
The ambiance reveals itself through a 12-foot high ceiling, rustic candlelit walnut tables and chairs, terrazzo floors, brick walls with pale-yellow accents, copper ceiling fans, over-sized artistic photos, and French doors opening onto a European-style outdoor cafe.
The menus are a sophisticated and creative combination of classic Provencal dishes and innovative new Mediterranean-inspired ones. Chef Anthony Raggiri’s menus represent the authentic cooking style of Provence with inspired influences from the surrounding countries of Spain, Italy, Greece, and Morocco. His Provencal dishes and sauces are enhanced by an impressive selection of fresh, flavorful herbs. Raggiri moved to New York City to become executive chef at Isobel, an innovative French/Mediterranean bistro in Brooklyn Heights.
Raggiri’s spring specialties are moderately priced and packed with flavor. It’s hard to offer suggestions from a menu that offers such options as an authentic fish soup, classic baked snails, onion and leek tart, and terrific steamed mussels in 4 variations. Besides a lovely free- range roast chicken, entrees include one of the best burgers in town and steak tartar. There’s a good selection of wines by the glass and an excellent bar, as well as such tempting desserts as pear tart with vanilla ice cream.
Bistro61 features a superior selection of global wines with a particular emphasis on French wines. The global wine list, created by Anthony Raggiri, changes seasonally and is continually evolving. The restaurant’s wine program features monthly wine dinners.
At Bistro61, the prices remain moderate. Lunch entrees range from $10.00 for Panini Parisien (French Ham, Cornichons, Parsley Butter & Arugula, Balsamic Vinaigrette. Pressed On A Baguette) up to $23.00 for Steak Frites Sauce au Poivre Vert (13 oz. Grilled Rib-eye Steak Served With French Fries and Green Peppercorn Sauce. Dinner entrees range from $14.00 for Bistro61 Burger (Topped With Sauteed Onions, Assorted Mushrooms, and Roquefort Cheese, Served With French Fries and Salad) up to $28.00 for Le Branzino Grille (Whole Fish Marinated With Fresh Herbs, Served With Wild Saffron Rice and A Touch Of Mixed Greens). The restaurant is open weekdays for lunch, seven nights a week for dinner, and weekend brunch. Bistro61, offers a refined dining experience sans attitude.
