Following Land Thai Kitchen’s success on Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, a second location on the Upper East Side has opened: Land NorthEast Thai.
At the new location, Executive Chef and Owner David Bank continues to offer his signature dishes of Crispy Fried Red Snapper with Three Flavors Sauce and Pan Seared Duck Breast with Chili Jam and Kaffir Lime Demi-Glace while introducing unique and piquant offerings from the lesser known Northeastern region of Thailand.
Chef Bank remains committed to utilizing quality ingredients in his creative menus of classic and modern interpretations of the vibrant and balanced flavors of Thai cuisine.
“In the new menu, I have incorporated the intense and aromatic cooking of the region we call Isan,” says Bank. The cuisine involves simple cooking methods such as grilling to bring out the true flavors of meats and poultry. “Many people are already familiar with Isan salads such as larb and nam tok and the Isan style of barbecue, so I know our customers are ready for more inventive dishes.”
We were impressed with the purity and authenticity of the cooking. From soft shell crabs (a special) to feathery vegetable dumplings and made-to-order Thai beef salad, everything was not only delicious, prepared with care. Other not to miss appetizers include divine shrimp parcels. Pad Thai is like no other version you will find in New York and is equaled by drunken noodles with chicken. All curries are recommended and Land specials as pan seared duck breasts and tamarind-glazed black cod are wonderful. Desserts are lovely to look at and light. Service by a young enthusiastic and attractive staff is also outstanding. For the time being you can BYOB. There is a special “Family Meal” (Exactly (What The Staff Eats) Served Mon-Fri for just $10.
Land NorthEast Thai’s decor possesses a modern ambiance similar to its Amsterdam Avenue location, with seating for 40 people. Dramatic latticework defines the dining area, lit from below to create a subtle glow. Thai chandeliers above feature touches of gilt and chrome. Chef Bank and his wife Wendy commissioned the silk lampshades, delicately hand-carved spoon rests, and wooden spice racks from Thai craftsmen to decorate the room and tabletops. Original wallpaper murals representing Spring and Fall adorn some walls.
Chef Bank entered the culinary world at his wife’s family restaurant in Ratchaburi, Thailand, where he was born and raised. When he moved to New York in 1995, his culinary career began at Typhoon Brewery and continued with esteemed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten at Mercer Kitchen, among others, before opening Land Thai Kitchen.
In 2006, the Michelin Guide gave high praise to Land Thai Kitchen, in its premiere New York Edition, making it one of a handful of Thai restaurants featured in the guidebook. Land was featured again in the 2007 New York edition.
A strong contender for New York’s best Thai kitchen!
