If you don’t believe what goes around comes around, stroll up to the Gracie Mansion area and a stretch of York Ave. where good, affordable food is mysteriously missing. Then, discover the new-age Mansion Diner that Owner Phil Phillips says his father openend the diner in 1945, and some of the equipment dates back five decades. Not one to rest on past laurals, Mr. Phillips with his son John, invested over a million dollars in an overhaul, that produced an open, airy, clean look with faux tin ceilings and comfortable booths. While the menu is huge, the kitchen manges to excell in just about everthing, from the best chicken soup in town to a spinach pie that make any Greek mama envious. Sandwiches are delicious, whether you go for a corned beef pastrami or a knockout chicken and ham panini. That food is restaurant caliber, is evidenced by a terrificly moist roast chicken, mavelous vegetables and a perfect baked apple. The friendly Mansion Diner, located at 1634 York Ave, off 86th st., vies for the title of Manhattan’s best diner.
