Owners of Cyrus Reinvent Healdsburg Bar & Grill in Sonoma County
The culinary talents behind Healdsburg’s celebrated Cyrus restaurant have gone casual: Chef Douglas Keane and legendary maître d’ Nick Peyton have taken the reigns at local Sonoma County hangout, Healdsburg Bar & Grill. Reinvented with keen attention to the finest ingredients, Healdsburg Bar & Grill serves burgers, pizzas and carefully-selected local beer and wines to an audience who enjoy a relaxed, affordable environment. “Nick and I wanted to create a casual, friendly alternative to the formality of Cyrus, while maintaining the quality in ingredients and warmth of service,” said Chef Keane. “Healdsburg Bar & Grill is a time honored establishment in town and we are excited to be able to give it new life.”
Chef Keane and Peyton are best known for Cyrus, their two star Michelin restaurant in Healdsburg where classic service and technique meet modern, international ingredients and unique preparations. While Cyrus offers an exquisite fine-dining experience, Healdsburg Bar & Grill maintains a high level of quality while serving comforting, affordable and family friendly favorites—all with a signature touches that only Chef Keane could create. With a passion for freshness, Chef Keane has designed the garden surrounding the large patio area with citrus trees, tomatoes, and herbs to be used in the kitchen.
To start
, diners can choose from a selection of classic favorites, re-interpreted to maintain their familiar flavors while using the freshest ingredients. Spicy Wings are made with Organic Fulton Valley Farms Chicken; A Very Adult Mac N’ Cheese finds new character with Fiscalini Cheddar, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and Hobb’s Bacon; a Caesar Salad is quartered hearts of Romaine, a finely balanced dressing, microplaned Parmigiano and, if desired, boquerones (fresh, Spanish anchovies).
A highlight of the restaurant are the HBG Burgers, each a half-pound, freshly ground Meyer natural Angus beef on a toasted Costeaux Bakery sourdough bun, with lettuce, red onion, Alexander Valley Gourmet pickles and roasted garlic mayonnaise. Following in Cyrus’ tradition of personalized dining, guests are able to customize their burger with many “Build Your Own Additions,” such as sautéed sweet onions, rogue creamery blue cheese, and ripe avocado.
Pizzas are also a featured part of the menu, each with handmade thin crisp crusts and housemade sauces. Sandwiches are available, including a Seared Tuna Sandwich with Tombo tuna loin, ponzu slaw and pickled ginger and a Veggie Sandwich with roasted Portobello and red pepper, cucumber, Redwood Hills Farm Goat Cheese, shaved fennel and chipotle aioli. As a perfect pairing to the burgers and sandwiches, the restaurant offers three kinds of fries (regular, garlic, and truffle and Parmagianno-Reggianno), which diners can pair with an assortment of dipping sauces such as chipotle aioli, creamy horseradish, and roasted garlic mayo. Sweets are also a part of the Healdsburg Bar & Grill experience, including a rich Butterscotch Pudding, HBG Brownie Surprise and a seasonal Warm Rhubarb Crisp.
As Healdsburg is undeniably an oenophile’s town, Healdsburg Bar & Grill offers a wine list that is a tour of mostly local Sonoma County offerings at affordable price points. Categories include Old Favorites (choices that “never go out of style”), Patio Wines (a selection of “wines that taste better outdoors”), “Five Square Blocks” (from wineries within five square blocks of the restaurant) and Founders (the multi-generational wine families of Healdsburg). In addition, corkage is complimentary when dining.
The restaurant’s building has been in existence since 1914, when the restaurant was then a harness and saddle shop, catering to the town’s equestrians. In its newest incarnation, it has extensive outdoor seating that can cater to up to 80, as well as room for 70 more indoors, positioning it for scenic year-round dining. Situated in the center of town on Healdsburg Avenue kitty corner to the Plaza, it is easy walking distance from all hotels and tasting rooms in central Healdsburg.
