The space is all about smell. Large burlap bags of various spices are hung from the ceiling, allowing a sweet aroma to take over the enclosed space. There is a mirror above the spice bags that allow patrons to see the reflection of the spices from their seats. The room seats 75. There is a large banquette covered in distressed brown leather placed around the right side of the room. The tables and chairs are all mahogany.
Despite the wacky concept, this friendly neighborhood restaurant has a lot to recommend it: supportive service, an owner that mixes with the customers and runs a neat ship, pleasant atmosphere and , wonder-of-wonders, order right and you’ll a have a very good meal.
Here’s what to eat; Any middle Eastern appetizers (cold) like well-spiced humus or tzatziki. The homemade focaccia and giveaway dips are terrific to. While I’d steer you away from the steak (we didn’t sample the chicken), the seafood is extraordinary, especially the Mediterranean sea bass. It’s done dry, with a rub & on the bone. parchment crisp, moist within: fresh as the sea.
Desserts too are not to be slighted, especially the homemade ice cream and pear tarte tatin. Good selection of beer. No booze yet.

Well there is something new in the neighborhood that will sauce up your appetite and leave you eager for more. It is Saucy (1409 York Avenue @ 75th street, NYC). Saucy will rescue your palate from the tedious nightly pattern you have been experiencing; adding flavor, aroma, and visual appeal to your taste buds.
Saucy’s innovative concept is sure to transform your relationship with food. It dresses, caresses, and impresses your palate through the uses of its flavorful sauces. Saucy is all about the sauce, not just about the organic chicken or pasta or beef. The menu consists of 50+ sauces based on color, flavor, & cuisine. It is in separate parts allowing you to order a Yellow Sauce (Classic French Dijon Mustard Sauce) or a Martini Sauce (Classic Italian Martini Sauce) or a Greek Sauce (Classic Greek Yogurt Sauce). Every sauce has an organic chicken pairing option, but depending on the flavor and ingredients of the sauce the menu recommends a beef and/or pasta as well. The appetizers on the menu go along with the saucy concept, the variety consists of many fish dishes, salads, and soups.
The design of Saucy emphasizes upon the strong aroma of spices. Large burlap bags filled with various spices are hung from the ceiling, allowing a sweet fragrance to take over the enclosed space. There is a mirrored ceiling above the spice bags that enable patrons to see the reflection of the spices from their seats. This creates a mouth watering experience and reinforces the restaurant’s concept of spice and sauce. The bar which is located along the back side of the restaurant is 14 feet long and seats 10 people. It is finished in a rustic copper satin metal. The back wall behind the bar is covered in Ivy and has glass shelves built within. Around the perimeter of the room there is a large banquette that is covered in distressed chocolate brown leather and sage chenille fabric. All the tables and chairs in the restaurant are covered in a mahogany wood finish. The restaurant’s natural color palette promotes a warm and comfortable environment for those who like to enjoy sophisticated meals in a perfect Upper East Side neighborhood.
Simon Mann is the executive chef/owner, and creator of this unique idea. Simon has a culinary degree and studied at the Sicilian Culinary Arts School in Italy. He has over 20 years of experience as an Executive Chef in Israel and served as executive chef in the US in five locations. His background of culture and travel around the world has enabled him to come up with this idea of nontraditional global saucy cuisine.
