Jazz Standard, New York City’s “Best Jazz Club” (New York Magazine) serving “NYC’s Best Barbecue” (Time Out New York) from Blue Smoke with its signature style of warm hospitality, presents another month of great jazz in December.

Tenor saxophonist Bennie Wallace and Disorder at the Border will appear Dec. 5-9 in a tribute to Coleman Hawkins. David Sanchez and Lionel Loueke will co-lead a new quartet from Dec. 11-16. An all-star lineup of Dr. Lonnie Smith, Nicholas Payton, Donald Harrison, and Peter Bernstein holds forth from Dec.18-23. And from Dec. 27-31, Jazz Standard will ring swing in the New Year with Trio Da Paz and (on 12/30-31) Kenny Barron joins the group.

The gala four-night affair features pianist Pablo Ziegler, a master of this unique musical form and the creator (with Enrique Sinesi and Walter Castro) of Bajo Cero, winner of the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tango Album. “To the devotee of Nuevo Tango, a performance by Pablo Ziegler is a deep experience, a trip to the heart of this music…He is a sort of musical brujo, a conjurer who can make all within earshot a believer in his message.” (NYJazzReport.com) Pablo’s special guests for the final nights of the “Tango Meet Jazz” Festival will be the great trumpeter Terell Stafford.

A prediction for 2008: You’re sure to be hearing more about Abigail Riccards and her delightful debut CD When the Night is New (Jazz Excursions). A semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition, Abigail has played with such veteran talents as Mulgrew Miller, Lonnie Plaxico, and George Duke; the next-gen innovators Matt Wilson, Ben Allison, and David Berkman all appear on her album, with its fresh and distinctive takes on “If I Should Lose You,” “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” and “It Might as Well Be Spring.” Catch Abigail Riccards on the way up at this Jazz Standard one-nighter!

“I’ve always loved Coleman Hawkins, and the more I hear him, the more I appreciate him,” says tenor saxophonist Bennie Wallace. “The more I get into his playing, the more subtleties I find.” In 2004, two weeks shy of the tenor titan’s birthday centennial, Bennie recorded the superb Hawkins tribute album Disorder at the Border (Enja)-and now he brings these timeless sounds to Jazz Standard, in the company of an all-star nonet. “When [Bennie Wallace] broke on the scene in the late Seventies, no one in that polarized era knew quite what to make of a saxophonist with one ear in tradition and the other in the vanguard,” Francis Davis in The Village Voice. “Disorder at the Border confirms he was going straight to the source all along.”

Tenor saxophonist David Sanchez burst upon the New York scene in the early Nineties and has been exploring the Latin/jazz nexus ever since. Beginning with Sketches of Dreams (1994, Columbia), he’s released seven albums as a leader including the ambitious Coral (2004), devoted to the works of Brazilian and Argentine composers. Now signed to Concord Records, David is the recipient of a grant from Chamber Music America to create a striking new composition, “La Leyenda del Canaveral,” that blends Afro-Caribbean and East African elements to accompany a poem written by his sister Margarita. The new work was premiered in March 2007 at the prestigious Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico and performed in October at Zankel Hall in New York. For this Jazz Standard run, the David Sanchez Quartet will feature the brilliant guitarist Lionel Loueke - a crucial contributor to Herbie Hancock’s new CD River: The Joni Letters.

Jazz, funk, classic soul - it’s all grist for the musical mill of Bronx-born singer/songwriter Stephanie McKay, whose work as a recording artist, performer, and collaborator has made her one of the most in-demand vocalists on the scene today. Stephane’s credits include two albums with the Brooklyn Funk Essentials, playing guitar for r&b star Kelis, and singing with major-league MCs Talib Kweli and Mos Def. Her debut solo album, McKay (issued in 2003 by Polydor/Universal), was produced by trumpeter Roy Hargrove and featured contributions from D’Angelo, Anthony Hamilton, Erykah Badu, and Steve Coleman, just to name a few. Multi-talented Stephanie McKay is certain to cast a magic musical spell at Jazz Standard!

Following in the footsteps of Hoagy Carmichael and Irving Berlin, J.C. Hopkins writes deceptively simple words and melodies that speak to something deeper, and more emotionally complex, with the potential to add a page to the great American Songbook. The Brooklyn-based composer/pianist has been a folk rocker, a hard rocker, and a piano bar entertainer en route to his current incarnation as the leader of one of the hippest little big bands in the country and the auteur of a first-rate album, Underneath The Brooklyn Moon (featuring “One Never Knows,” co-written by J.C. and Norah Jones). This engagement will feature Nicole Nelson, whose rich, warm voice has been compared to those of Eva Cassidy, Gladys Knight, and Jill Scott.

Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, and Duduka da Fonseca a/k/a Trio Da Paz have been redefining Brazilian jazz since 1990 with their “distinct and sometimes dazzling flair for sophisticated jazz interplay and improvisation,” wrote Mike Joyce in the Washington Post. “…The Trio juxtaposes tunes that feature insinuating Brazilian themes and acoustic textures with more contemporary pieces that vibrantly bridge pop and jazz styles.” Cafe, the group’s latest CD release, includes performances by Cesar Camargo Mariano, Dianne Reeves, and Joe Lovano. On December 30 and 31 (New Year’s Eve), veteran pianist Kenny Barron, hailed by Jazz Weekly as “the most lyrical piano player of our time,” will join Trio Da Paz.
