OAK ROOM JANUARY 15-26 IN “MAKE ME RAINBOWS”

Award-winning website, Punchin-dot-com, features the Walman Report and reviews of restaurants, travel, wine and theater. For two weeks only, a mid-winter thaw will descend on the Oak Room when vocalist Sandy Stewart and jazz pianist Bill Charlap (SHAR-lap) present their new show, “Make Me Rainbows,” January 15th through January 26th, so make your reservations quickly and enjoy their eclectic songlist, which includes “Make Me Rainbows” (Bergmans/John Williams) “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “All in Fun” (Jerome Kern), “Tea for Two” (Youmans/Caesar), “Last Night When We Were Young” (Arlen) and “They’ll Be Some Changes Made” (Higgins/Overstreet), among others. Shows are Tuesday through Thursday at 9 pm and Friday and Saturday at 9 pm and 11:30 pm, with a $65 cover charge plus either a $30 minimum or $70 prix fixe dinner (dinner is mandatory early Friday and Saturday shows). Reservations: 212 419 9331. That’s 212 419 9331. Sandy Stewart and Bill Charlap (SHAR-lap) at the Algon quin’s fabled Oak Room rate A Major on the Walman Report.

After a radio career as a child performer in her native Philadelphia, Sandy moved to New York for appearances with Ernie Kovacs, Merv Griffin and Dick Van Dyke on the CBS Morning Show. She became a regular on the Perry Como and Ed Sullivan shows, earned a Grammy nomination for Kander & Ebb’s “My Coloring Book” (losing to Ella Fitzgerald’s “Mack the Knife”) and toured with Benny Goodman. After her marriage to the late Broadway composer Moose Charlap, Sandy retired to rear her family before resuming her career. Jazz Review called her recent Blue Note CD with Bill, Love Is Here To Stay, “a superb example of classic pop, jazz and cabaret vocalizing…a delight.”
Bill Charlap is riding a crest of popularity occasioned in part by the sensational reviews for his recent Blue Note recordings, Bill Charlap Plays George Gershwin: The American Soul and Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein. “Both were uniquely New York characters,” says Bill. “Gershwin came out of Tin Pan Alley and Broadway…Bernstein started as a composer-conductor in the European tradition. Gershwin had to work up to opera; Bernstein had to work up to musical comedy.” When not touring internationally with his trio, Bill is artistic director of New York’s 92nd Street Y’s Jazz in July.
