Austrian Wines Offer Outstanding Quality and Value

Get ready America. Discover the new darlings of wine collectors, gourmet restaurants and connoisseurs: the amazing wines of Austria. Not only do they offer outstanding value, they are perfect food wines and delightful on their own for casual quaffing. And here’s the surprise. Not only are the whites terrific, the reds, especially Pinot Noir, display real character and offer a unique taste of the grape and the terrior.

Like German wines, deciphering lables can require some education, but we have simplified the process by staying with a trusted importer/distributor in NY State, in this case, Frederick Wildman & Sons Ltd., and the selections of a native Austrian with a solid background in food and wine, both in New York and her native-land, Monika M. Caha, who represents the vineyards. The rest of the USA will be handled by other companies and the wines will be available in many states by the end of 2006.The current winemakers include Anita & Hans Nittnaus, Gols-Neusiedlersee-Burgenland, www.Nittnaus.at Fritsch, Kirchberg am Wagram-Donauland, Niederoesterreich, www.Fritsch.cc Forstreiter, Krems/Hollenburg-Kremstal, Niederoesterreich, www.Forstreiter.com Graf Hardegg, Seefeld/Kadolz-Weinviertel, Niederoestereich, www.Grafhardegg.at.

WEINGUT MEINHARD FORSTREITER

Schiefer Gruener Veltliner 2004. Perhaps Austria’s best known wine in America, this is an excellent example and the price is right at just $18.50 Suggested Retail.

The vineyard of 20 hectar/49 acres is situated in Krems-Hollenburg in the Kremstal, along the right bank of the Danube River, across from the Wachau.  There has been wine production in and around Hollenburg since the Roman Empire.

The Forstreiter family has been making wine here since 1868, but it has been the current owner and cellar master, Meinhard  Forstreiter, who has brought the vineyard to a new level of quality and reputation.

A complex nose with concentrated flavours of oranges, peaches and a hint of smokiness, plus a long finish makes this a perfect companion to smoked meats and fish, game, pate or meatloaf and hard cheese.

 ANITA & HANS NITTNAUS

2001 TBA

Suggested Retail: $57. Outstanding in every way! Surprisingly affordable for this quality.

Sweet wines are made from grapes that have a a raisin-like “noble rot” condition, called botrytis; these wines show a style that is typical of the Neusiedlersee region ("Seewinkel”).

TBA - Trockenbeerenauslese: the highest grade of sweet wine.

Excellent TBA wines, have important criteria:

a) careful selection of grapes.

b) high alcohol content that reflects a perfect balance between     alcohol, sugar and acidity.

c) long barrique ageing period (minimum of 2 years), which is     very important for the wine´s stability.

The most important varieties for our TBA wines are Chardonnay (60% in this case)  Sauvignon (20%) and Neuburger ((20%).

Rich yellow and golden colored, with a honey and melon, it is big, balanced with an aftertaste that lasts forever. The ideal mate to foie gras, blue cheese and desserts.
